Connect a Formlabs SLA printer via USB, Ethernet, or WiFi

Set up and manage connections between your computer and a Formlabs SLA printer for uploading prints over USB, Ethernet, or WiFi.

Before connecting your printer, install or update PreForm and make sure your printer's firmware is up to date.

There are three options for connecting a Formlabs SLA printer (Form 2 or newer):

USB

The USB cable that came with the printer is intended for a secure, wired connection. Plug the parallel end of the cable directly into the back of your printer and connect the other end to the USB port on your computer.

Ethernet

There is an RJ-45 Ethernet LAN connection on the back of the device. Use a shielded CAT-5 Ethernet cable to connect the printer to a local network. Plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the back of the printer and connect the other end to your LAN.

WIRELESS INTERNET ACCESS

Formlabs SLA printers (Form 2 or newer) have built-in WiFi. Configure a wireless network connection using the printer's touchscreen.

Configuring the WiFi connection of a Form 2:

How to configure a Form 2's WiFi connection:

  1. Tap the printer icon on the home screen. The screen Your Printer appears.
  2. Tap on Wi-Fi (WLAN). The screen Wi-Fi (WLAN) appears.
  3. switch Wi-Fi (WLAN) on OH NO) around. The toggle button turns blue.
  4. Tap the wireless network you want.
  5. When prompted, enter your network password and tap the arrow to confirm.

Annotation:

To upload a print to a Form 2 over Wi-Fi, your computer must be on the same network as the printer.

 

Configuring the WiFi connection of a Formlabs LFS printer (Form 3 or newer)

How to configure the WiFi connection of a Formlabs LFS printer (Form 3 or newer):

  1. Tap the wrench icon on the Home (Start)-Screen. The screen Settings appears.
  2. Tap on Connectivity> Wi-Fi. The screen Wi-Fi (WLAN) appears.
  3. switch Use Wi-Fi on OH NO) around. The toggle button turns blue.
  4. Tap the wireless network you want.
  5. When prompted, enter your network password and tap the check mark to confirm.

Annotation:

To establish a WLAN connection with the Form 3L / Form 3BL, screw the WLAN antenna onto the connection on the back of the device, directly next to the power, USB and Ethernet connection.

To upload a print to a Formlabs LFS printer (Form 3 or later) over WiFi, your computer must be on the same network as the printer unless remote printing is enabled.

Manual IP configuration

The printer can be configured with a static IP address via an active Ethernet connection or an available WiFi network.

Manual IP configuration via WLAN or Ethernet (Form 2)

How to use manual IP configuration on a Form 2 over WiFi or Ethernet:

  1. If you have an existing Ethernet or WiFi connection, tap the printer icon on the start screen. The screen Your Printer appears.
    • For WiFi networks, tap Wi-Fi (WLAN) and then to the wireless network you want. The screen Wi-Fi (WLAN) appears.
    • For Ethernet connections, tap Ethernet. The screen Manual IP settings appears.
  2. Turn the Manual IP settings on OH NO) around. The toggle button turns blue.
  3. Enter the appropriate IP address, Subnet Mask, (Default Gateway) Standard gateway and Name server a.
