The Hessian Finance Minister Thomas Schäfer has passed away

The police assume a suicide. The doctor of law was considered a possible successor to party colleague and Prime Minister Volker Bouffier.

(afp) The Hessian Finance Minister Thomas Schäfer (CDU) was found dead on Saturday. As the police announced in the evening in Wiesbaden, the body of the 54-year-old was discovered in Hochheim in the Main-Taunus district on an ICE route. "Due to the overall circumstances", the investigators assumed a suicide, it said in a press release.

The doctor of law was traded as a possible successor to Prime Minister Volker Bouffier (CDU) should he not run again in the state elections in 2023.

In a statement that evening, Bouffier was “stunned and shocked” at the death of Schäfer. He expressed his "sincere condolences" to the relatives. Schäfer had been Hesse's finance minister since August 2010. He was a co-founder of the Living with Cancer Foundation.
