Masaaki Suzuki - J.S. Bach: Toccatas, BWV 910-916 (2020)

Very little is known about the origin of J. S. Bach’s seven Toccatas (BWV 910-916) or of their use. They are believed to have been written before 1717 or the end of Bach's Weimar period - but it is quite possible that at least some of them were drafted before he arrived there in 1707, at the age of 22. The Toccatas are usually performed on harpsichord or piano - but even though they are 'manualiter' (intended to be played by the hands only) and do not call for pedal parts, they are also occasionally heard on the organ. In terms of style they are examples of the so-called stylus phantasticus - the most free and unfettered method of composition ’- and belong to the North German organ tradition of the late 17th century.

Martin Helmchen, German Symphony Orchestra Berlin - Beethoven - Pianos concertos 1 & 4 (2020)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit / 96 kHz | Time - 01:09:32 minutes | 1.17 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Digital booklet, front cover | © Alpha

As the celebration of the 250th anniversary of Beethovens birth approaches, and following a much-admired version of the Diabelli Variations (Alpha 386 Gramophone Editors Choice), Martin Helmchen has decided to record his complete piano concertos in the company of musical partners with whom he has a special affinity, Andrew Manze and the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. They devote this first volume to the Concertos nos. 2 and 5, giving lovingly polished performances of these two masterpieces of the piano repertory. Composed even before Concerto no.1, the Second Concerto was premiered in Vienna in 1795, when Beethoven was only twenty-five years old, but underwent several revisions before being published in its final version in 1801. Concerto no.5 is the last that Beethoven composed. Though completed in 1808, it was not premiered until 1811. Beethoven normally gave the first performance of his concertos himself, but this time his increasing deafness meant he was unable to do so.

Martin Haselböck - Beethoven: Symphonies 5 & 6 “Pastoral” (Resound Collection, Vol. 8) (2020)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit / 96 kHz | Time - 01:20:10 minutes | 1.4 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Digital booklet, front cover | © Alpha

The Orchester Wiener Akademie and its conductor Martin Haselböck continue the “Resound Beethoven” series, performed on period instruments and scrupulously respecting the orchestral layouts of 200 years ago. Volume 8, the last volume of the series, is devoted to two emblematic works, both of them dedicated jointly to Prince Franz Joseph Maximilian Lobkowitz and Count Andreas Kirillovich Razumovsky: Symphonies Nos. 5 and 6. Each of these symphonies has a name attached to it. While the Fifth Symphony is sometimes called the ‘Fate’ Symphony for more or less determined reasons, Beethoven himself named ‘Pastoral’ the Sixth, thus pursuing the venerable tradition of the musical pastorale while conferring a new dimension on it.

Elle is Marina Rebeka's fourth solo album, celebrating the diversity of the female roles in some of the greatest French Opera arias of the canon. “The Blue Hour” is the moment between the end of the night and the daybreak, when one can see it appear before it has risen: this little breach through time allow us to foresee. Marianne Piketty and the Concert Idéal gather several works written by visionary composers: the mystical chants of Hildegard von Bingen, known for having experienced visions and Hartmann’s Concerto Funebre which announces the horrors of the nazis. Philippe Hersant and Dmitri Shostakovich complement the program as their works echoes to these musical visions. After the success of “Le Fil d’Ariane”, Marianne Piketty and Le Concert Idéal continue their exploration of time as they unite these works over the ages, for a prophetic recording.

Dr Teleny’s Incredible Plugged In Orchestra / Ettore Stratta - Stolen Goods / Viva Vivaldi! (1968 & 1970) [Reissue 2019]

or FLAC 2.0 Stereo (converted with foobar2000 to tracks) 24bit / 96 kHz | Full scans included | 1.56 GB
2 LP on 1 SACD | Features Stereo and Quadrophonic Surround Sound | Vocalion # CDSML 8552

A pair of very unusual albums - back to back on a single CD! Stolen Goods is a totally cool, totally groovy album from the 70s - one that features large orchestral arrangements of themes from the classics - but all augmented with plenty of wild contemporary touches! There's moogy electronics, funky drums, wordless vocals, and lots of other hip 70s elements - including the kind of horn section that would have made Mozart, Chopin, or Beethoven wince - had they lived long enough to hear the approach to their songs served up on this British album! From what we can tell, Dr Teleny is Zack Laurence - who's billed as the musical director on the album - serving up transformed tunes with titles that include “Power Play”, “Wild Turkey”, “Rhapsody From Hunger”, “Superjoy”, “Johann Sebastian Rock”, and “The People Yes”. Next up is Viva Vivaldi, served up by Italian conductor Ettore Stratta - who you’ll know from both sound track and easy instrumental modes - getting a lot of hip help here from arranger Chico O’Farrill! The songs are all from Vivaldi - as you'd guess from the title - but Chico's charts add in plenty of sweet 70s touches, including electric bass, keyboards, and other instrumentation that moves things way past the baroque generation - even making some tunes groove in a surprising way. There's still enough strings in play to tie the songs to classical roots - and titles include “Gloria Allegro”, “Mandolin Concerto In C Adagio”, “Suite From Four Seasons”, “Flute Concerto In D”, “Concerto In E”, and “Concerto In G For Two Mandolins”.
