Words count PDF - this is how you get this information

For term papers or theses, a certain number of words is specified, which you can write at most or at least. But knowing the exact number of words in a document can also be helpful for other reasons. However, your options for counting the words within a PDF are limited.

How to count the words in a PDF

  1. You can open a PDF with different software, but at least or none of these programs have a function for counting the words.
  2. If you want to know the exact number of words, the easiest way is to open the PDF directly in Word.
  3. Alternatively, you can copy the text and then paste it into a program that displays the number of words.
  4. The word processing program Word from Microsoft is ideal for this.
  5. Open the PDF you want to know the word count of. Copy the text with a right click and then select "Copy". Alternatively, you can use the key combination "Ctrl" + "C".
  6. Now start another program that will show you the number of words. Then paste the copied text either via an “Paste” option within the program or with the key combination “Ctrl” + “V”.
  7. If you are using Word, you will now see the exact number of words in the document on the lower bar of the program.
  8. If this information is not displayed to you, click with the right mouse button on the lower bar and select "Word count".
