Set up email in the Mail app for Windows 10

When you sign in to Windows 10 with a Microsoft account with an Outlook.com, Live, Hotmail, or MSN address, that account is added to the Mail and Calendar apps. You can add these and many other email accounts to the Mail and Calendar apps to start sending and receiving email, and creating and managing events.

Adding a new email account

  1. Open the Mail app by clicking the Windows Start menu and clicking Mail choose.

  2. The first time you open the Mail app, you'll see a welcome page. Choose Add account out to begin.

    If you've already used the Mail app, select at the bottom of the left navigation pane Settings and then Manage accounts out.

    Note: On a smartphone or tablet, tap the three dots (...) at the bottom of the page to select Settings to access.

  3. Choose Add account out.

  4. Select the type of account you want to add.


    • You may have to in the dialog box Add account scroll down to view all options.

    • If you Google you still have to sign in to your Google account, enter your two-step verification code (if you have activated this security feature) and give Windows permission to access your data. click on Allow, and your account will be created.

    • If you choose a different email account, you will need to follow the specific instructions in Specific instructions for other accounts below.

  5. Enter the required information and click Log In. For most accounts, this is your email address, password, and account name. The name of the account appears in both the left pane of Mail for Windows 10 and in the Manage Accounts pane.

    Note: If you receive the message "No information was found for this account. Please make sure the email address is correct and try again." appears, you have to click three times To repeat before the button changes to Extended changes. click on Extended, and follow the steps in the next section to add your account.

  6. click on Finished. Your data will begin syncing immediately after the account is set up.

Adding an account with advanced setup

There are two ways to access the advanced setup options for your email account.

  • click on Advanced setupif the automatic email setup in step 3 above fails.

  • In step 2 above, click in the window Select account on the option Advanced setup. Advanced setup is the last option on the list and you may have to scroll to see it.

    You can one Exchange ActiveSyncAccount or a Internet emailSelect account. If your administrator did not instruct you to use Exchange ActiveSync, click Internet email.

Enter in the window Advanced setup the following information:

  • E-mail address This name will appear in the left pane of the Mail app.

  • User name This is your full email address.

  • password Enter the password for your email account.

  • Account name This is the name you will see in the left pane of Mail for Windows 10, as well as in the Manage Accounts section. You can choose any name.

  • Sends your messages under this name Enter the name that you want recipients of your messages to see.

  • Incoming mail server Contact your ISP or administrator for this information. Typically, the inbound server address is in the format mail.contoso.com or imap.google.com. For many email accounts, you can find this information in our POP and IMAP server name reference.

  • Account type Select POP3 or IMAP4. Most email accounts use IMAP4. If you don't know which option to choose, contact your Internet service provider.

  • Outgoing mail server (SMTP) Contact your ISP or administrator for this information. Typically, the outgoing mail server address has the following format: mail.contoso.com or smtp.contoso.com.

  • By default, all four check boxes at the bottom of the window are checked. Most email accounts don't need to change any of these options.

Your email provider can provide you with the settings you need to complete the advanced setup, but you can also switch to the POP and IMAP server name references we've provided for the most popular email providers .

When you have entered the required information, click Log In > Finished.


If you're having trouble setting up your account, try the following:

  • If you've upgraded to Windows 10, you'll need to add your accounts again in Mail for Windows 10.

  • Make sure the email address and password are correct. Passwords are case-sensitive.

  • If you are seeing your recent messages but not older messages, you probably need to change the sync time for your email.

  • If you get a message that your account is out of date, you will likely need to update either your password, incoming and / or outgoing mail server, or SSL settings. For more information, see How to Repair an Outdated Account.

Special instructions for other accounts

If you've enabled two-factor authentication for your iCloud account, you'll need to create an app-specific password so that you can add your iCloud account to Mail app.

  1. Sign in to your Apple ID account page.

  2. Select the option under "App-specific passwords" Generate password out.

  3. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Microsoft has OAuth support for Yahoo! added accounts in Windows 10 Creators Update. If you want to install the Creators Update now, go to the software downloads website and select Update nowout. For more information about the update, see Windows 10 Creators Update is here.

If you have a Japanese Yahoo! If you have an email account you need to do the following:

  • You need to have your Yahoo! Add. Account as an IMAP account. To do this, follow the steps in Adding an Advanced Setup Account Using imap.mail.yahoo.co.jp for the incoming mail server and smtp.mail.yahoo.co.jp for the outgoing mail server.

If you want to sync your QQ mailbox with the Mail and Calendar apps, you need to use IMAP on QQ. activate.

  1. Sign in to your QQ account.

  2. Choose Settings > account > POP3 / IMAP / SMTP / Exchange / CardDAV / CalDAV service off,> the IMAP / SMTP service > to opento find.

  3. You may need to send a text message to activate this service. After completing step 2 to open selected, a dialog box may appear asking you to use your phone to send a message to the phone number shown.

  4. After the text message is sent, QQ will open a new dialog box with an authorization code. Copy the authorization code as needed to add your QQ email account in the Mail and Calendar apps.

  5. In the Mail and Calendar apps, remove your QQ account and add it again with the authorization code.

    Your QQ account should now be synchronized automatically.

If you try to connect your GMX.de or WEB.de account with the mail and calendar apps, you will receive an email in your GMX.de or WEB.de mailbox with instructions on how to activate access .

  1. Log in to your GMX.de or WEB.de account in a web browser.

  2. Find the email message that has instructions on how to connect your account to the Mail and Calendar apps, and then follow the instructions.

  3. Your account should now automatically sync with the Mail and Calendar apps.
