Foreword

The nordmedia-sponsored film productions completed in 2016 and documented in this catalog fan out into an exciting and diverse kaleidoscope of themes and cinematic narrations. This spans from comedy to drama, from thriller to cultural event, from documentary to nature film, from current events to historical accounts and from local happenings to global developments. And all of this in diverse genres - whether live-action movies, animations, experimental films or cross-media. These offer an interesting mirror-image of contemporary events and are at the same time a vivid testimony of the high quality of nordmedia-sponsored productions. A number of examples: The feature-film drama CLASH takes up the setting of the 2013 demonstrations in Cairo. The documentary film ENDSTATION BATACLAN portrays the development of one of the assassins in Paris. MOSCHEE DE documents the conflicts surrounding the construction of a mosque in Germany. WHEN PAUL CAME OVER THE SEA, THE NEW WIGGING OF THE PEOPLE and PARAGRAPH QUESTION DOPPELPUNKT cast light on migration and flight from very different perspectives. Examples of historic portrayals are the scenic documentary GOTTFRIED WILHELM LEIBNIZ and the feature film PAULA, whose protagonists have close links with Hanover (Leibniz) and Bremen (Paula Modersohn). Historical topics are dealt with, for example, in the dramas THE PUPPET PLAYERS or THE INVISIBLE. Recent contemporary history is brought to life in the comedy KUNDSCHAFTER DES PEACE as well as in the TV film KALTE WASSER. DIE HERBERGE, produced within the framework of the cast & cut scholarship program, is an animated experimental short film well worth seeing, while DAS LEBEN IST JIPPIE bears the hallmarks of an innovative transmedia platform for children. 1000 MEXICANS, STRAWBERRY BUBBLEGUMS, SUDDENLY TURK and EAST FRIESIAN FOR BEGINNERS make up the successful NDR Nordlichter comedy productions, while

history was written in the “Tatort” detective series by TAXI NACH LEIPZIG: the 1000th episode was at the same time the quota hit for nordmedia. Last but not least, the numerous TV features and documentaries also provide insights into the landscapes, people and culture in the region. The catalog DIE FILME 2016 provides comprehensive information on these and many other projects. Be prepared for a surprise! We would like to thank our funding bodies and all the filmmakers for the trust they have placed in nordmedia. We also wish you, the readers, a great deal of fun browsing through the catalog.

DO YOU SOMETIMES FEEL BURNED OUT AND EMPTY? (AT) Do you sometimes feel burnt out and empty? (WT) Komödie / comedy HD, approx. 95 min, Germany / Netherlands 2017

For couples therapist Luisa everything grows over his head: job, marriage, affair. One day there is a second self in her bed. Her alter ego, which she baptizes Ann, is naive, but capable of learning, and lives out the needs that Luisa suppresses with power: sweets and chips in huge quantities and trusted togetherness with husband Richard. Luisa uses the second self for spontaneous sex with her lover Leopold, who is also Richard's boss. But Ann opens Luisa's eyes to the outside view of her life and plunges her into fundamental self-doubt. What looks like a sudden loss of control is Luisa's chance to internalize her needs and longings - a deep crisis for Luisa and a winking, idiosyncratic invitation for the viewer to doubt and not believe his eyes.

What appears to be a sudden loss of control from the outside is in fact an opportunity for Luisa to internalize her needs and longings - a deep crisis for Luisa and a winking, idiosyncratic invitation to viewers to doubt and not to trust their eyes.

HAPPY BURNOUT Spielfilm / feature film HD, 90 min, Germany 2017

Alt-Punk Fussel is a womanizer, life artist and system refuser out of conviction. Job? Not with him. He prefers to take it easy, always has a saying ready and, with his boyish charm, wraps the acquaintance of the supermarket counter around his finger as does his neighbor Mrs. Pasternak and Mrs. Linde, the clerk in the employment office. Which has fallen for him and tolerates his reluctance to work hard - until an internal review forces her to take action.

Old punk lint is a womanizer, enjoys the good life and is a system refuser out of conviction. Work? Not with him. He prefers taking it easy, always has a witty comment at hand, and with his youthful charm, twists the lady at the supermarket counter around his little finger just as with his neighbor Ms Pasternak and Ms Linde, the clerk at the employment office. Being a slave to him, she tolerates his reluctance when it comes to job-seeking - until such time as an internal review forces her to take action.

Lint cannot be persuaded into a job, so she gives him something else: a certificate of incapacity for work. Diagnosis of burnout. Including therapy in an inpatient clinic. So the chaotic do-no-good will find nothing to me, nothing to you between the real burned-out, the stranded in a society obsessed with efficiency ...

Because lint resists being persuaded to take up a job, she arranges something different for him: a certificate of incapacity to work. Diagnosis burnout. Including therapy in an inpatient clinic. Hence, at the drop of a hat, the chaotic good-for-nothing finds himself among real burnouts - the stranded of a society in efficiency mania ...

CUSTOMERS OF PEACE Scouts of Peace Komödie / comedy HD, 90 min, Germany 2016/2017

27 years after the fall of the wall, the everyday life of Jochen Falk - once the legendary top spy of the GDR foreign intelligence - has become rather monotonous. But then the former archenemy BND asks surprisingly for his help. Falk senses the chance to settle an outstanding account with the West Agent Kern and agrees to the operation. Of course he needs his old team and the BND has no choice but to reactivate the rest of the so-called “scouts of peace”: the eccentric tinkerer Jaecki, the windy logistician Locke and the not quite fresh Romeo agent Harry. Reluctantly accompanied by the young BND agent Paula, the group of pensioners is smuggled into Katschekistan. But the mission threatens to sink into chaos until the four return to their old skills ...

27 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, everyday life for Jochen Falk - once a top spy in the GDR reconnaissance abroad team - has become pretty mundane. But then his former arch-enemy, the German Federal Intelligence Service, unexpectedly asks for his help. Falk sees the chance to settle an open score with the West secret agent Kern and agrees to the mission. He needs his old team to do this, of course, and the German Federal Intelligence Service has no choice but to reactivate the remnants of the so-called “Scouts of Peace”: the eccentric tinker Jaecki, the dodgy logistics expert Locke, and Harry , the not quite so sprightly Romeo agent. Reluctantly accompanied by Paula, a young agent of the German Federal Intelligence Service, the group of pensioners are smuggled into Katschekistan. Separated from their families, they make decisions every day that could cost them their lives. With an unwavering will to live and often with reckless courage, they master everyday life in an exceptional situation. Hanni bleaches her hair and becomes literally invisible. Eugen prints chain letters against Hitler. Ruth cooks for a high-ranking officer. Cioma forges passports for himself and other victims of persecution. Besides their inventiveness in their various activities, the four of them are reliant on the help of people who don’t want to turn a blind eye to the abduction and murder of their neighbors.

It's already dark and they are standing at a bus stop: Charlotte Lindholm and Klaus Borowski - two chief inspectors who neither know nor want to know each other. For different reasons, they have just left a police seminar. Charlotte has a private rendezvous. Borowski is trying to escape from an obtrusive seminar participant, the aging policeman Affeld.

All three end up in the taxi of an angry and highly aggressive man. He has just learned that the love of his life will marry his mortal enemy tomorrow. It is not a good idea to provoke this man. Affeld does it anyway. A short time later he is dead. Borowski and Lindholm are tied up in the back seat. And as different as they assess the situation, they all agree on one point: if they don't stop the driver, they will die.

All three of them end up in the taxi of an angry and highly aggressive taxi driver. He has just learned that the love of his life intends to marry his mortal enemy the following day. It's not a good idea to provoke this man. Affeld does so, all the same. Shortly afterwards, he is dead. Borowski and Lindholm are sitting on the back seat tied up. And even though they assess the situation very differently, they certainly agree on one point: if they don’t manage to stop the driver, they will die as well.

It is the tentative peak of every story of flight which is meant to end in official asylum and admission to Germany: a hearing by decision-makers in one of the regional branches of the German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF). Applicants and decision-makers only meet face to face on a single occasion. Whoever seeks asylum must substantiate in this hearing that he or she was persecuted in their home country. The staff of the German Federal Office for Migration have to assess whether or not an applicant may remain in Germany. All they have at their disposal is the law, their own judgment and their conscience. A film about the job of making decisions about people’s destinies and the impossible task of always doing the right thing.

BOTTICELLI INFERNO Documentary / documentary 4K, 96 min, Germany 2016

The documentary BOTTICELLI INFERNO pulls us under the spell of the mystical story of Sandro Botticelli's "Mappa dell’Inferno" - the funnel of hell. Botticelli's paintings “The Birth of Venus” and “Primavera” are world famous, but he also had a dark side.

The documentary BOTTICELLI INFERNO deeply draws us into the spell of the mystical story behind Sandro Botticelli's “Mappa dell'Inferno” - funnel to hell. Botticelli's paintings “The Birth of Venus” and “Primavera” are world-famous - the artist did have a dark side, however.

We take a look at Botticelli's life - and at one of the most disturbing, but at the same time most fascinating, works of art of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. He painted and drew hell in the “Mappa dell’Inferno”, as the poet Dante had described it in the “Divine Comedy”, and it took him more than a decade to do so.
