solution

Method 1: check for updates in Windows Defender

To check for updates in Windows Defender, do the following:

  1. Start Windows Defender if it is not already open. To do this, click on begin, Programs and then on Windows Defender.

  2. Look for new definitions. To do this, click on Check for updates now.

Method 2: Manually install the latest definitions and check Windows Update files

Microsoft provides updates for Windows Defender via Microsoft Windows Update, Automatic Updates and Windows Server Update Service (WSUS). In some cases, you may receive error messages related to these services but not related to Windows Defender. To determine the source of the problem, first try manually installing the latest definitions. If you can manually install the latest definitions, the problem is likely a Windows Update problem.

Step 1: Restart the computer, if necessary

Go back to Windows Defender and write down the error code on the Home screen. If the error message you received in Windows Defender contains code 0x80240016, restart your computer. If the code 0x80240016 is not in the error message in Windows Defender, go to step 2.

Step 2: Manual installation of the current definitions

To manually install the current definitions, do the following:

  1. Visit the security portal on one of the following Microsoft websites:

    • If you are using the English version of Windows, visit the Security Portal on the following Microsoft website:

      http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/ADL.aspx

    • For more information about the Security Portal for non-English versions of Windows, click the following article number to view the Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

  2. Follow the steps on the website to download and install the appropriate definition updates.

  3. If you cannot manually install the definition updates, or if you continue to receive error messages about definition updates in Windows Defender, there are problems that are not described in this article. If so, ask someone else for help or contact support.

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary, visit the following Microsoft website.

  4. If you can manually install the latest definitions, the problem is likely a Windows Update problem. So continue with step 3.

Step 3: Check that you have all the required Windows Update files

To verify that you have all of the required Windows Update files, do the following:

  1. Open the Windows Update website. To do this, go to the following Microsoft website:

    http://www.windowsupdate.com

  2. Install any recommended updates. If you have problems with Windows Update, advanced troubleshooting is required. If you are new to advanced troubleshooting, ask someone else for help or contact support. Method 3: advanced troubleshooting

Make sure there are no problems with Windows Update, Automatic Updates, or Windows Server Update Service (WSUS)

Microsoft provides updates for Windows Defender via Microsoft Windows Update, Automatic Updates and Windows Server Update Service (WSUS). In some cases, you may receive error messages about problems caused by one of these services. In this case, these error messages do not relate to Windows Defender itself. To resolve a possible Windows Update problem, follow these steps.

You can use the step-by-step methods in this article to resolve this issue on your work computer. However, if you are in a corporate environment, the network may be configured by the administrator so that you cannot download the definitions. The administrator may also have deployed a Microsoft Software Update Services server on the network. Software Update Service (SUS) 1.0 may be used in the network. However, Windows Defender cannot receive updates from SUS 1.0. In this case, the network administrator must deploy Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). Definitions for Windows Defender must be offered by the WSUS server. You should therefore consult with your network administrator before attempting any of the workplace methods described in this article.
