How to Grout Tile Quickly in the Philippines

Gluing wall tiles and then grouting: It's that easy

The walls, projections and niches in our bathroom are tiled. Before laying the tiles, the recesses for the connections for water pipes, drainage pipes and heating systems are determined. The shower and bathtub must be installed watertight.

Colored surfaces are intended to loosen up the walls. It is obvious that only extensive preparatory work and planning can lead to a good result. When the need for tiles has been calculated, the appropriate amount of adhesive and joint filler is purchased and the right tools are laid out. Because once the work has started, it has to move forward quickly.

Start with small areas

Measuring the wall surfaces is important for the success of the work. No wall is exactly vertical and no floor is absolutely level. The surfaces and auxiliary lines are drawn on the wall with a folding rule, spirit level and plumb bob. The colored areas are marked before laying.

In order to end up with a whole tile, the height of the base tile must be measured precisely. The width of the cut tiles in corners and on protrusions should not be too small. That doesn't look good, and very narrow cuts can hardly be cut.

If you have never laid tiles before, it is advisable to work with skirting boards. An auxiliary strip is attached to the wall for the first horizontal and vertical row of tiles.

The tile adhesive is only applied when this work has been completed. Here the base tiles are set first. An expansion joint must be planned for the distance to the floor, which is then later sealed with permanent elasticity. Base tiles can also be set using the buttering method. The tile adhesive is applied to the entire surface of the individual tile with the correct notched trowel.

The adhesive is initially applied in small, manageable areas and combed through in order to get used to the working method and pace. The area that can be tiled in one operation until the skin forms becomes larger with constant practice.

It does not matter in which direction the tile adhesive is combed - vertically, horizontally or diagonally. It is only important that evenly full adhesive webs are always visible, which guarantee a void-free gluing. The tile is inserted into the adhesive bed by pushing it in and "pressing it on" while applying light pressure.

At no point must it lie directly on the substrate without mortar. A good help, especially for inexperienced tilers and with larger joints, are spacers or tile corners, which are inserted as spacers. These small plastic crosses are lower than the tiles and can remain in the joints. They are available in different widths.

Another useful help are two tiling corners, which are placed on the right and left of the vertically laid tiles and connected with a guide line. This device for orientation and dimensional accuracy is also called "tile witch". With the size of the area that is combed up in one go, it should also be taken into account that the seating of the tiles can only be corrected in the open time.

Depending on the glue, this is between 10 and 15 minutes. So always correct the position of the tiles at smaller intervals with a spirit level, plumb bob and a sense of proportion before they are firmly tightened. Step back from time to time to see the bigger picture. Fresh glue is the easiest to remove from tiles and joints. For this reason, tiled sections should be cleaned immediately with a wet sponge.

Joints seal the surface

All surfaces are tiled. During the work, excess tile adhesive was already scraped out of the joints in order to achieve an even joint depth. The surfaces must now be cleaned very thoroughly of adhesive residue with a damp sponge.

Grouting can begin 24 hours after tiling. If possible, wait a little longer so that the tile adhesive can harden thoroughly. If you want to start earlier, you have to work with a quick-release adhesive when tiling, which has already hardened after approx. 3 hours. Grout is available for indoor use in various colors that match the sanitary colors.

White was used in this bathroom because white is the dominant color here. For grouting in the bathroom and kitchen, you use a grout that is elastic and impermeable to water. Joints are grouted, which means that the grout must be thinner than the adhesive mortar. The need depends on the width of the joints. Here, too, mix smaller quantities first, because the work progress is easily overestimated. Especially with colored grouting, the grout must always be mixed evenly in order to obtain a uniform joint pattern. The label on the packaging provides information about the correct mixing ratio.

The joint filler must be worked thoroughly into the joints diagonally to the course of the joint with the sponge board or the joint rubber. This should be done very carefully, because with this operation the tiled surface is sealed and protected against moisture penetration.

Here, too, you proceed in sections and remove the excess grout with the joint rubber. After the mortar has set, the surfaces are washed off with a damp sponge, which must be rinsed out repeatedly. Finally, polish with a dry cloth.

Step-by-step to the perfect result

Measure and mark of the tiled surfaces is particularly important if patterns are to be laid or tiled in two colors.

Mix and comb of the adhesive only when all preparatory work has been completed. Start with small areas.

Base tiles will be set first. Without cavities, the tiles are pressed into the adhesive bed by gently pushing them into place.

Tile crosses can be placed between the tiles in order to achieve even joints that are matched to the size of the tile.

Section by section the tile adhesive is applied. Always as much as can be tiled in the time it takes for the skin to form.

corrections With the help of a spirit level, tile witch and a sense of proportion can be carried out in the open time.

Glue bars can combed vertically or horizontally. The tiles must be laid in a fully covering mortar bed.

Wall corners become first tiled from bottom to top, then you work your way up layer by layer.

Adhesive residues must then thoroughly removed from the glued surfaces with a damp sponge.

Grout can can be spread over the surface after just 24 hours with a joint rubber or a sponge board.

Joints should be diagonal to be filled in the direction of the joint. Excess grout is removed with the sponge board.

The surfaces are After the mortar has set, clean it with a damp sponge and polish it with a cloth.
