How to format a 4TB hard drive

4 TB hard drive is shown as 2 TB. What to do?

Does your 4TB hard drive show up as 2TB? Or even less? Do not worry. The storage space is not gone. If you encountered this problem on Windows 10/8/7, you can try the solution in this article and restore capacity.

I have a 4 TB external hard drive. After I connect this hard drive to the computer, the space only shows up as 2TB. I cannot save files or other data to the hard drive. What is happening? How can I solve the problem?

If a 4 TB hard drive only shows 2 TB in Windows 10 and the other space is shown as unallocated space, what to do? The reasons behind the problem can be partition style, hard drive and other errors. In this article we have collected five solutions. Follow the solutions so that it can see the full amount of space on the hard drive.

Solution 1. Convert MBR disk to GPT

If a 4TB hard drive is not properly recognized in Windows 10, the problem may have something to do with the partition style. Under the Windows system, an MBR hard disk that is larger than 2 TB cannot be recognized. If you don't know the partition style, you can check its properties. In Windows Explorer, right click on the hard drive and select Properties. Look at the partition style. If you have an MBR hard drive, you can convert the hard drive from MBR to GPT. In this part we can offer you three methods for conversion.

Method 1. Convert the partition style with a simple tool

The simple solution to the problem is to convert this hard drive from the MBR to the GPT. If you want to convert this hard drive through Disk Management, the option “Convert to GPT Disk” may have been grayed out. In this case, you can also do the conversion through EaseUS Partition Master.

EaseUS Partition Master is a professional hard drive management software. If you want to change the partition style or convert the file system, the software can always help you. Besides the conversion, you can also use the software to change the partition size, e.g. extend the system partition, merge the partitions, etc.

Step 1. Download and launch EaseUS Partition Master on your Windows computer.

step 2. Right click the MBR disk you want to convert to GPT and select "Convert to GPT" out.

step 3. After the conversion you can click "Perform 1 operationClick "to see the pending operation. Then click"Apply"to perform the conversion.

After that, the hard drive should show up as 4 TB. If there is unallocated space on it, you can also use the software to convert the unallocated space to a partition or add it to another partition.

Method 2. Convert the hard drive using the command prompt

If you do not want to use any other software and have experience with the Windows command prompt, you can also use the following commands.

Step 1. Give "cmd”In the start menu. Right click on the command prompt and select “Run as administrator”.

Step 2. Give "diskpart”At the command prompt and press the Enter key.

Step 3. Enter the following commands and hit the Enter key after each entry.

  • list disk
  • select disk n (Replace “N” with the number of the MBR disk)
  • list partition
  • select partition n (Replace “N” with the number of the partition you want.)
  • delete partition
  • If there are multiple partitions on the hard drive, repeat the “select partition” and “delete partition” commands to delete all partitions on the hard drive.
  • select disk n (Replace “N” with the hard drive number.)
  • convert gpt

Step 4. After the conversion, enter "exit"and press the Enter key to close the command prompt.

Method 3. Convert MBR disk using Disk Management

You can also use Windows Disk Management. Because the hard drive is larger than 2 TB, you cannot perform the conversion directly. First delete the partitions on the hard drive, then you can convert the hard drive to GPT.

Step 1. Right-click on the Windows icon and choose "Disk management" out.

Step 2. Find the hard drive. Right-click the space that is not shown as unallocated space and select "Delete volume" out.

Step 3. If you receive a message, click on "Yes”To perform the deletion.

Step 4. Wait for the deletion. Then click with the right mouse button on the hard disk and select “Convert to GPT" out. After the conversion, you should use the hard drive on the Windows 10 computer.

Solution 2. Update the driver software

If that's already a 4 TB GPT hard drive, what to do? Try still to update the driver software. If the driver software is out of date, the hard drive cannot be displayed correctly in Windows. You can do the update in the device manager.

Step 1. Give "Device manager”In the Start menu and open the tool.

Step 2. Go to "Drives”. Right click on the hard drive and select “Update driver”.

Step 3. Choose "Automatically check for updated driver software”And wait for the update.

Solution 3. Check hard drive errors

Did you check the hard drive for any unknown errors? Hard drive errors can also lead to this problem. Therefore, you can perform the check as follows.

Step 1. Open Windows Explorer.

Step 2. Right click on the hard drive and select “properties" out.

Step 3. Under the "Tools"Tab click"Check”.

Step 4. In the window that appears, click on "Scan drive”. If errors are found, the tool will automatically repair the errors. After that, restart the computer and check if the hard drive is displayed correctly.
